London, Ontario — The Windsor Lancers football community and sports fans across Canada are mourning the sudden passing of former offensive lineman Dan Gyetvai, who died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 47. A standout athlete, respected colleague, and beloved family man, Gyetvai’s unexpected death has left a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Gyetvai was a cornerstone of the University of Windsor Lancers football program during his collegiate years, earning widespread recognition for his dominant play on the field. He was named the Lancers’ Lineman of the Year in 1998 and went on to claim Offensive Player of the Year honors for three consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2001. A two-time OUA First Team All-Star and CIS All-Canadian in 2000 and 2001, Gyetvai solidified his legacy as one of the program’s all-time greats.
In 2007, Gyetvai was inducted into the Gino Fracas Wall of Honour, a tribute to his outstanding contributions to Lancer football. He was also a proud member of the Lancers’ 40th Anniversary All-Time Team. After college, he played four seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, further cementing his place in Canadian football history.
Beyond the gridiron, Dan Gyetvai was a mechanical engineer who worked for Cami Automotive, Labatt’s, and most recently served as a manager in the Facility Management department at Western University. Known for his work ethic and leadership both on and off the field, Gyetvai also gave back to the sport as a football referee and continued his athletic journey with the Windsor Rogues Rugby Club and Team Canada Rugby League.
Dan was also a passionate craftsman who loved woodworking, cooking, kickboxing, and staying active in the gym. But above all, he was devoted to his family, choosing to step away from professional football to focus on farming with his late father and raising his children.
He is survived by his fiancée Jill Disik, and his daughters Kja and Cali (with their mother Nissa Boulanger), as well as his mother Angie, siblings Kristen (Matt) and Mike (Sandra), and nieces and nephews Eddy, Samantha, Angela, Patrick, and Charlotte. He is also remembered by numerous cousins and extended family. Dan was predeceased by his father Edward Gyetvai and brother Steven Gyetvai.
Visitations will be held on Saturday, June 28, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m. at Westview Chapel in London, Ontario. Loved ones, former teammates, and members of the community are invited to pay their respects and celebrate a life defined by athletic excellence, dedication, and unwavering kindness.
Dan Gyetvai will be remembered not only for his achievements on the field but for his infectious sense of humor, generous spirit, and genuine heart. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched—as a teammate, father, mentor, and friend.
